Daniella Smith at All Saints Normanton Youth Project
Arriving at All Saints Parish Church in Normanton was initially quite a daunting prospect but soon as I met different members of the community, each one with open arms it started to become enjoyable.
Gavin Budby, the Youth Leader in charge of me made sure I was comfortable and at ease in all situations. I was, however, thrown straight in at the deep end, as on the first day Gavin and I attended a group for young mums named Inspire. Within ten minutes I was playing on the slide with two year old Jack and rocking seven month old Daniel in my arms. This gave me a taster as to what was in store for me over the next two weeks!
My confidence improved over the time spent with the young people of Normanton, as I began to interact with others more naturally. The other days were just as hectic with after school clubs such as Chill Out Zone and Rock Solid where games and music were on offer to entertain the young people of the community. Street Team was a great experience where we went on board the church minibus and took to the streets of Normanton in the hope of gaining the trust and conversation of the young people.
I have gained many skills from these two fun and eventful weeks, such as the ability not to judge a person before you know what they are really like. I have been accepted into this tight knit community, with different families providing my dinner every day. I must thank Ron and Rose Young for their hospitality, but also Gavin for his leadership and for the amazing contribution he makes to the community around him.
I am so grateful for the wonderful opportunities the Rank Foundation has given me and am so glad for gaining such an experience as this, and am very excited about next year already!
