Ann Doyle - Cornerstone

(A charity for the homeless and vulnerable on Moss Side in Manchester.)

The task: To help every Wednesday afternoon and on some weekends in their coffee bar and clothes shop.

Ann’s Report: Initially I was concerned about coming to Cornerstone and not knowing what would be expected, but when I arrived I was pleased I had, and enjoyed getting to know what it was about and relating to the people involved. I have definitely benefited from being here. This is because the people who attend never expect to receive anything, but use it as a retreat and somewhere to meet people in similar predicaments.

On attending Cornerstone each week I felt one of the team who was going to leave an impression, whether on the people who attended the Centre or on the Centre itself. However, it was the centre that had an impact on me because I was clueless on how a number of these people lived and it encouraged me to have an involvement, not only in serving within the coffee bar and the shop, but to interact with them on another level. These skills will help me in the future not to judge people on initial appearances, and help me to manage a group of people who are different from me, even though this might not be what I want to do in the future.
