Opportunity

Youth Offending Teams link volunteers with young (aged 10-18) first-time offenders given an order by the courts for crimes of minor assault, burglary, vandalism or anti-social behaviour. Following an interview with a YOT officer, the offender and parent/guardian attends a meeting chaired by a volunteer panel member. Assisted by another volunteer, the purpose of this meeting is to draw up a contract with the young offender tailored to address their offending behaviour and looking towards helping them with their individual and often complex needs. the order forces the young person to confront their offending behaviour and to explain their actions not only to their parents but also to members of their community and sometimes the victim and the police.

Consequential thinking and victim awareness are key for the young person to gain an understanding of the wider implications of their crime and the effect it has on other people. Volunteering for the YOT Referral Panels can take up as much or as little time as you like and they are flexible to work around your schedule. For information on your local YOT, contact your local authority or look online at http://www.youth-justice-board.gov.uk
