Paddington Arts

The inaugural School Leaders day was held on 14th September 2005 at Paddington Arts, based in west London. Paddington Arts is the first Rank supported charity profiled by the Rank Fellowship.

The Rank Foundation started working with Paddington Arts in 1994, as part of the Rank Foundation Youth Work programme. The Rank Foundation currently supports over 160 Youth Work initiatives throughout the UK.

Background- The Rank Foundation Youth Work Programme

"The Rank Foundation invests widely in youth programmes throughout the UK. The emphasis throughout is on supporting young people's involvement in informal education, leadership, leadership and skills training. The community-based projects that receive rank support focus on community development, cohesion, and regeneration". (source: Coming of Age published by the Rank Foundation 2005).

Paddington Arts & the Rank Foundation

There are three Rank Youth Work Schemes, which the Rank Foundation funds, in which have been in operation at Paddington Arts:-

1. Youth or Adult?
This is an initiative over five years, which combines the training (by distance learning on the job) and qualification of youth workers with the development of a youth work project in the UK's independent voluntary sector primarily with 16-25 year olds. This scheme ran from 1994-1999.

2. Key Worker Posts
For those projects, new or established, that require a qualified and experienced youth worker to develop aspects of an initiative, initially over 3 years.

3. Rank Volunteer Award (Gap)
A leadership programme covering a 6 to 9 month period for volunteers aged 18-23, drawn from the independent school sector or the charitable projects currently supported in the Rank Foundation's network. This involves training for all the young people and varies from national governing body awards to qualifications in part time youth work, community work and informal education.

Paddington Arts - Origins

Paddington Arts is a youth arts organisation created in 1987 and committed to developing talent and creativity in the community. It encourages young people to use the arts for self-expression and career development. The values at the heart of their work are access, excellence, education and fun.

Paddington Arts' Key Aims:-

  • Helping young people to articulate their aspirations and achieve their ambitions by providing opportunities for self expression and career development within the arts
  • Dismantling cultural, physical, economic and attitudinal barriers by creating opportunities to participate in the arts
  • Working with partners in the community to maximise the take-up of programmes and the use of facilities
  • Contributing to the economic, environmental and social regeneration of the immediate community and of Greater London
Extract from Director's Report 2003/04

Steve Shaw has been Director of Paddington Arts from the start in 1987. He was host on the School Leadership Day, and has kindly given us permission to post this report on our website, and refer to it in our e-mailings.

The following paragraphs are an extract from Steve's 2003/04 Report. A successful relationship between funder and charity is vital for both parties.

"Our success comes from the creativity of our members, the commitment of our staff and the support of our management committee. In addition, I must include the faith of our funders. Last year we had thirteen funders. Some fund us every year, some for one-off projects only.

Whilst it is my job to put together an integrated programme of arts activities for young people, our funders have a variety of aims and agendas. I see our relationship with our funders as a two-way partnership: they sign up to support our aims, and we sign up to support theirs. For example central government aims to tackle poverty, improve educational attainment, reduce crime and anti-social behaviour and reduce health inequalities; the local Health Authority aims to enable disabled people to have a greater say in their lives; the Arts Council aims to bring the arts to a wider cross section of society; the aims of trusts and foundations is to help those most in need and disadvantaged to have a better life."
