The Tall Ships Youth Trust is the world's oldest and largest sailing training organisation. To dte, the Trust's ships have sailed 1.5 million nautical miles with over 65,000 trainees on board. Over 4,000 trainees will sail on STAVROS S NIARCHOS and PRINCE WILLIAM this year. Each voyage of 48 trainees is managed by six qualified permanent crew and 12 experienced volunteer crew with professionally qualified teachers and youth workers joining youth voyages - a new and pioneering approach to sail training.
The TSYT, incorporating The Sai Training Association, is a registered charity founded in 1956 and dedicated to the personal development of young people aged 16 - 25 through the crewing of Tall Ships. The two ships, STAVROS AND PRINCE WILLIAM are two magnificent 60 metre square-rigged sail training vellels and promote sail training around the world. Nearly 50 years on the TSYT remains a world leader in the field of youth development.
There are sixty Tall Ships Youth Trust local support groups across the UK, recruiting a broad cross-section of young people and fundraising to subsidise the cost of their voyages.
The TSYT's youth work is supported by the Department of Education and Skills and the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted). The TSYT voyages qualify for the residential section of the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. The TSYT is the UK's largest single provider of the RYA Competent Crew Certificates.
Volunteering vacancies exist for the following: Watch Leader, Deck Hands, Cooks Assistant, 2nd Cook, First Aid Purser (Para Medic, Nurse, Doctor) Assistant Engineer, Youth Mentors (Youth Workers, Teachers). (A voyage must be undertaken before volunteers can be rostered, except Youth Mentor).
